Support The Ministry

Why Support Green Lake Conference Center?

Green Lake relies on prayer and financial help from supporters to make our dreams a reality. Since our first season in 1944, this is a place where people have come to experience a closer walk with God and to be inspired by great Christian leaders including Martin Luther King Jr., Leighton Ford and Philip Yancey.

Adults, families, youth and church leaders connect at Green Lake with God and each other in catalytic relationships. We are passionate about Christian leadership training experiences like the Center for Excellence in Congregational Leadership (CECL) and the Church Planting Assessment Center which help pastors and churches realize God’s dreams for them.

We enjoy hosting a wide variety of other groups including university retreats, school environmental education groups, scrap booking groups, non-profit company training meetings and many others. We are a favorite location for family reunions and vacationers. We love to provide each and every guest with great experiences at this place where God moves and the Holy Spirit works.

Through your gifts to Green Lake Conference Center, you allow us to maintain and improve the facilities, provide programming, and fund scholarship grants. Scholarships enable hundreds of pastors, lay persons and youth to come to Green Lake for a conference ranging from the World Mission Conference, to the Church Planting Assessment Center, to the Quest Youth Leadership Program that would otherwise not have been able to attend.

But your gifts also accomplish something else: They enable us to extend our ministry to those who cannot afford to support it financially. That's why we ask you to please prayerfully consider supporting Green Lake Conference Center. Thank you for your involvement in our ministry!

Stocks

Giving Appreciated Securities
The benefits of donating appreciated securities (either stocks or mutual funds) are tremendous. You are able to avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation, and you also get to deduct the full fair market value of the security at the time of gift. This is an excellent way to leverage your gift in support of our ministry.

As long as you have held the security for longer than 12 months, giving through appreciated securities can work as follows:

Example. Ann bought stock 15 years ago for $1,000. The stock has appreciated significantly and is now worth $10,000. Ann decides to donate the stock directly to Green Lake Conference Center. If Ann itemizes, she will get a $10,000 charitable income tax deduction even though she only paid $1,000 for the stock. Ann avoids paying a capital gain tax on the $9,000 of appreciation ($10,000 minus $1,000). The tax avoided could be $1,800 ($1,350 x 15%). Since she transferred the stock directly to Green Lake, versus selling the stock, she also avoids paying a sales commission to her broker.

Gifting Appreciated Assets Chart Sell Stock and Gift Proceeds Gift Stock
Value of Asset $10,000 $10,000
Original Purchase -1,000 -1,000
Amount of Appreciation $9,000 $9,000
Value of Asset $10,000 $10,000
Capital Gain Tax (15% Fed)* -1,350 N/A

Proceeds to Ministry (Asset minus Tax)

$8,265 $10,000
Your Tax Savings (41% Federal & State)** $3,547 $4,100

Note: Even though many people have seen this type of growth in the stock market in recent years, the above example is for illustration purposes only. At this time, the example does not apply to tax-exempt retirement plans (e.g. IRA’s, 401(k), etc.).

If you are interested in donating securities, there are several ways to make the transfer:

Electronic Transfer – This is a convenient way to transfer your securities. Simply instruct your broker to electronically transfer your securities out of your account into ABA’s Ameritrade account. Your broker will need: our account number 769378688, DTC number 0188 and the account name, listed as “American Baptist Assembly.” As a second choice we also have an A.G. Edwards account. Please notify us of stock transfers as no donor information is provided with the transfer.

Certificate Transfer – Transferring your certificate can be as easy as endorsing the back of the certificate and sending it by certified mail to ABA/Green Lake Conference Center. You must sign the certificate in front of a bank officer to obtain a "medallion signature guarantee." (Notary public stamps are not an acceptable guarantor for stock certificates.) A medallion signature guarantee is required on all certificates. Be sure to endorse the certificate exactly as your name(s) appears on the front. For example, if your certificate is listed as “John F. and Mary P. Jones”, you will need to sign the certificate exactly as “John F. Jones”, and “Mary P. Jones.” Insert ABA/Green Lake Conference Center’s tax identification number, 39-0806806, in the box on the back requesting a social security number or other identifying number of assignee. Mail it by certified mail to: ABA/Green Lake Conference Center, Attn: Development Department, W2511 State Road 23, Green Lake, WI 54941-9599.

Employee Owned Stock in Non-Retirement Plans – If you purchased stock from your employer (e.g. non-retirement E.S.O.P.) you can instruct them to issue a certificate with our legal name of American Baptist Assembly. They will need our tax identification number, 39-0806806, and our address as given above.

Mutual Fund Transfers – Contact Green Lake Conference Center’s Development Department at (920) 294-7334 to find out the most efficient way to transfer a mutual fund. We will provide the transfer instructions specifically related to your mutual fund company.

Once a transfer has been completed, please contact us. This is very important, especially if the gift has been transferred electronically to our account or a certificate has been issued in Green Lake Conference Center’s name, since your name will not be associated with your donation. We would also like to say “thank you” personally as well as provide you with an acknowledgment letter for your tax purposes.

* Assumes a holding period of over 12 months, 15% capital gain tax rate, $9,000 x 15%=$1,350.
** Assumes a holding period of over 12 months, 35% federal income tax rate, and a 6% state income tax rate, $8,650 x 41%=$3,547; $10,000 x 41%=$4,100; however, tax rates vary from state to state.

Matching Gifts

Green Lake Conference Center friends may have the chance to multiply the money that our ministry receives. Many businesses — from large corporations to regional companies — have matching gift programs set up to encourage their employees to donate money to charities and public service organizations. Even retired employees are often eligible to participate in their former employer's matching gift programs.

The typical matching gift program is set up so that a company or corporation gives the same amount of money its employee gave to the same charity. Green Lake Conference Center is eligible for many matching gift programs. To participate, simply:

  • Check with your Human Resources or Matching Gift Department to see if your company has a matching gift program.
  • Fill out an application and send it with your donation to Green Lake Conference Center.

If Green Lake Conference Center is not listed or offered as a choice at your company, please take the following information to your matching gifts coordinator. Ask them to consider adding Green Lake Conference Center as a charitable organization to receive matching funds. They will need the following information:

Green Lake Conference Center is a non-profit corporation which is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as tax-exempt under section 501 (c) (3) and to which contributions are tax deductible under section 170.

Please let us know if we can add your company to our matching gifts list by e-mailing Valarie Powell or calling us at (920) 294-7336. You can fax your request to (920) 294-3848.

Matching gifts are an easy way to increase your giving to Green Lake Conference Center without taking another dollar out of your pocket. Matching gift forms are quick and easy to fill out, and they not only benefit Green Lake Conference Center but also help you become a better steward of your gifts.

Planned Giving

For generations American Baptists have supported the ministry at Green Lake through wills and other planned gifts. In 1994 Green Lake Conference Center and the American Baptist Foundation formed a partnership to assist friends of Green Lake interested in seeing their Christian witness continue after their death.

Through this partnership Green Lake Conference Center and its supporters have access to the knowledge and expertise of American Baptist Foundation representatives across the country. These representatives assist our supporters with planned giving options that match their ultimate plans for stewardship. Some of these goals may include guaranteed life income and tax reduction with a final gift benefiting the ministry at Green Lake.

One planned giving option available through the Foundation is the Gift Annuity. In exchange for a gift of $1,000 or more, the American Baptist Foundation will pay a specified annuity to you, and if you wish, another person for life. The amount of the payment you receive is fixed, based on your age when the annuity is funded, and will not change as long as you live. This is an attractive feature today when many have seen their income levels fall.

In addition, when you create a gift annuity you receive an immediate income tax charitable deduction. And the payments you receive are partially tax-free for a number of years. Moreover, the balance remaining in the annuity when you and other recipients are gone could be distributed to benefit the ministry at Green Lake.

The table on this page outlines the annuity payout rates offered by the American Baptist Foundation for a single life annuity.

If you would like more information regarding a gift annuity or other planned giving options, call your area Foundation Representative (see list at right); or call Kathy or Val in the Development Office at (920) 294-7334. There is no cost or obligation for the confidential services of the American Baptist Foundation.
