Christmas invites us into a story far bigger than twinkling lights or singing along to Michael Bublé. It is the celebration of the moment Jesus was born. As we move through this season, we prepare not only for the holiday but for the awe of Christ’s arrival: Immanuel, God with us. In the quiet moments between gatherings, travel, and list-making, Advent invites us to slow down and look for the ways God is already moving. Here are three simple practices to help you notice His presence more clearly this Christmas.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Christmas begins in stillness. Before angels filled the sky with song or shepherds hurried to the manger, there was a quiet night in Bethlehem where God began His greatest work. You might create a simple daily practice: light a candle, read a short passage of Scripture, and pray a one-sentence prayer that orients your heart toward Jesus. Consider following an Advent countdown, a prayer each day, leading you closer to the celebration of Christ’s birth. Just a few minutes of silence can open surprising space for peace, gratitude, and renewed wonder.

“Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” 1 John 4:7
The heart of Christmas is generosity. God loved us so deeply that He sent His Son, and our response is to share that love in the ordinary places of our lives. This season, consider blessing someone through small, intentional acts:
When we love others simply, we open our hearts to Christ and allow His character to shape our days. In giving, we remember what we have been given.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” Psalm 19:1
Even in winter (especially in winter) God’s creation speaks. The still lake, the quiet shoreline, the trees resting under a layer of snow all point to a Creator who is steady, faithful, and near. Whether you are on the grounds of Green Lake Conference Center or noticing beauty right outside your door, take a moment to pause and look. Let creation remind you that God is not distant. He is active in every season, including the cold and quiet ones.
As we approach Christmas, may this season draw you closer to Jesus. May you find quiet moments of reflection, opportunities to love others, and glimpses of God’s beauty that renew your hope. From all of us at Green Lake Conference Center, we pray that your Christmas is filled with peace, joy, and the deep assurance that Christ is with you, today and always.
